Meet the Trainer

Candace Bighead

Owner & Head Trainer – Prairieland Service Dog Training

I’m Candace, the founder of Prairieland Service Dog Training. I’m a full-time mom, service dog handler, and dedicated trainer who believes in building real-world partnerships between dogs and the people who depend on them.

I specialize in working with owner-trainers because I am one. My service dog, Bentley has stood beside me through parenting, health challenges, and the kind of days that knock the wind out of you. I know what it means to rely on your dog not just for tasks, but for calm, confidence, and survival.

Some trainers talk about how great their dogs are. We train dogs to help people live. That’s the difference.

I work with people facing disability, trauma, neurodivergence, and the reality of training dogs while juggling life, kids, and everything in between. My approach is structured, honest, and deeply respectful of the bond between dog and handler.

We don’t chase perfection. We build trust, clarity, and capability—step by step.

My role isn’t to fix your dog. It’s to help you become the handler they need you to be—even when life is messy.

Prairieland Service Dog Training (PSDT) began with Candace’s journey to train her own service dog, Bentley. When Candace recognized the need for a service dog in her life, she quickly realized the challenges and barriers many owner trainers face. Through hard work, research, and dedication, she successfully trained Bentley, who became her loyal and skilled partner.

The process not only changed Candace’s life but also inspired her to help others achieve the same success. Seeing how Bentley’s training transformed her independence and confidence, Candace knew she wanted to share her knowledge and support other owner trainers on their journeys.

PSDT was founded to provide the tools, guidance, and encouragement owner trainers need to create their own life-changing partnerships—just like Candace and Bentley.
